This past Tuesday my mom, my mother-in-law, and my sister Amanda took me out to eat for my birthday. Afterward they came to the house to see the kids. Just a few pics from that. Thanks for the lunch, ladies : )
So, many of you may be familiar with the story of how God parted the Red Sea so that the Israelites could cross on dry land and escape the Egyptians who were coming after them? If you are familiar with it, bear with me as a paint the scene: 1 million-plus Israelites are pretty much shoved out of Egypt after God delivers His final blow to the stubborn Pharaoh. They start on their walk through the dessert, being led by a large cloud by day and pillar of fire at night, God's presence ever before them. Where ever He went....they followed. They followed Him right up to the shores of the Red Sea. There they camped for a few nights and then hear the reports that the Egyptians changed their mind, they want their slaves back, and they are coming for them. The Israelites panic, questioning why God would lead them to the shore of a sea, only to get captured. Answer: to show them His power. God had a plan, a way to rescue His people. Five years ago today I became a mommy. A whole new adventure as many of you can relate to. Today we celebrated Owen turning 5 years old. He has waited SOOO long for this day. I think he has been talking about turning 5 for at least 6 months. We were so glad to have both sets of grandparents and my brother Sam be able to join us for supper and cake afterwards. Altogether there were 16 of us around the dinner table. I've been having this thought rolling around in my head lately about these teenagers that we serve here at Gateway. Sometimes I get stuck in the thought that this is my job and that my actual life occurs on the 9 days off I have each month. But I've been reconsidering what my life really consists of. I believe that living at Gateway IS my life. Whew. I said it. That sounds kinda big. But I believe that my family life currently consists of 3 toddlers and 5 teenagers and a wonderful husband. When I start looking at these kids as more than 'residents' so...
Dear Child, You are a treasured child of the King. The world is going to tell you that you are going to lose, but take heart - THEY DON'T KNOW THE RULES. Don't take it personally when some kid makes fun of your mismatched-on-purpose clothing choices or the stuffed animal that you brought in for show-in-tell or calls you some name that brings tears to your eyes. They only call you that to make their own selves feel better. There is something about you that threatens them. And by calling you out on your 'lameness' somehow makes them feel like you are back to their level. I want you, dear child, to be sure of yourself, knowing God has created you as a unique individual, with unique qualities and tastes. The best person you can be is YOU, not an imitation of someone else. People's valuation of you should not matter, only God's valuation of you should. Measure yourself by His ruler, by His Word, not by the measuring stick of your peers....
Happy Birthday Nicole!
ReplyDeleteI know it's awfully late, but with not being on facebook and then being in FL, I've been a little out of touch.
ReplyDeleteI, of course, thought of you on your birthday and sent you happy mental wishes from the Magic Kingdom.
Oh! and my friend Brandy's baby was born on our day too :-)
